What's Needed to Have My Own Website

Main Parts of a Web Site

To have a website on the Internet, you need to have three basic parts:

  • A Domain Name
  • A Hosting Plan
  • The Files Required
What do each of these parts do? I will briefly explain what each part does to contribute to a functioning website.

Domain Name

The easiest way for me to describe a domain is to compare it to a telephone number. Just as a telephone number can be moved from carrier to carrier, a domain name can be moved around as well. I'll save the boring old details for a different time. How do you get a domain name? Simple, you register it through a domain registrar like GoDaddy.com or NetworkSolutions.

Hosting Plan

After you have a domain name, you are ready to acquire the second necessary piece of the web site 'puzzle', the hosting plan. I like to compare the hosting to the floor space a person rents to run a store. Just like you need a kitchen to make pizzas in, you need a server to have a web site on. That is where the hosting comes in. Where can a person get hosting? There are many hosts on the Internet that will sell you a hosting plan for a monthly or yearly fee. Before you run out and get hosting though, it might be helpful to know a couple of differences in types of hosting accounts.

First, there is VPS hosting. This is a type of hosting that you want if you anticipate a high amount of traffic or if you are planning on storing a large amount of data on the website.

Second, you have basic hosting. This will be your choice if you are planning on running a very small web site consisting of a few pages that will resemble an online brochure.

Web Site Files

This is the point where you find a web design specialist to build your site for you and/or  advise you on the necessary things to keep in mind while building your site.

So there you have it. The basic things you need to have a web site on the Internet. I hope that helps.
